Vanessa Butler, MSW, RSW (Therapist)

Sometimes stress, burnout, or the pressures of daily life can leave you feeling stuck, exhausted, or unsure how to move forward. Therapy can be a space to pause, gain clarity, and reconnect with the strengths and resilience you already have.

I will help you to navigate life’s complexities and uncover practical ways to cope, grow, and thrive. My approach blends Strengths-Based and Person-Centered perspectives (building on what’s already working for you), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (unpacking thought and behaviour patterns), Trauma-Informed Practice (safely processing difficult experiences), and insights from psychodynamic, humanistic, behavioural, and integrative theories.

Whether you’re managing burnout, seeking support for life transitions, or helping a child or teen build confidence and resilience, we’ll work collaboratively at your pace. Together, we’ll explore challenges, clarify what matters most, and create meaningful, sustainable change.

While our work can be serious, well-placed humor and lightness often offer perspective and relief. Growth doesn’t have to be heavy all the time! My goal is for you to leave each session feeling supported, understood, and more connected to yourself and your strengths.

My Story

I was born in London, England to a British father and a French mother, and when I was three, we crossed the ocean to make Canada our home. Over the years I’ve lived in Alberta and many beautiful corners of British Columbia, but the pull of Vancouver Island has always been strong. The ocean air, the forest trails, and the slower rhythm of Island life have a way of grounding me like nowhere else. This is home.

Outside of my work, I’m a proud mom of three. I find joy in hiking, beachcombing, swimming, and cooking—simple things that keep me connected to the land, the water, and the people I love. I also bring lived experience in many of the areas I focus on in my practice, which helps me connect with clients in a way that is both personal and deeply understanding.

For more than a decade, I worked as a care aide, believing my path might lead me into nursing or medicine. But sitting beside people in their most vulnerable moments taught me something important—my real calling wasn’t only in tending to the body, but in holding space for the whole person: the mind, the heart, and the relationships that shape us. That realization gently steered me toward medical social work.

Today, I bring that same whole-person approach to my work with two medical homes on the West Shore, collaborating closely with physicians and witnessing every day how deeply the mind and body are connected. For me, it’s not just about healthcare—it’s about heart care.
